ross-strait relations have long been a complex issue, marked by tensions and competition. However, in recent years, there have been signs of improvement in the relationship between Taiwan and mainland China. This paper will explore the current state of ross-strait relations and examine whether a new era of peace and cooperation can be expected.
Firstly, it is important to understand the historical context of ross-strait relations. The two sides have had a tumultuous relationship since the end of World War II, with periods of conflict and tension interspersed with attempts at dialogue and reconciliation. The most significant event in this regard was the Tiananmen Square protests in 1989, which led to a deterioration in relations that has persisted to this day.
However, over the past decade or so, there have been some positive developments. In 2016, Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen took office on a platform promising greater transparency and inclusivity in government decision-making processes. This has led to increased engagement with civil society groups on issues related to cross-straits policy.
Furthermore, there have been efforts made by both sides towards economic integration. In 2013, Taiwan signed an agreement with mainland China aimed at promoting trade liberalization through various measures such as reducing tariffs on agricultural products from each other's countries (Taiwan News). Similarly last year saw an increase in direct flights between Taipei City airport (TPE) & Beijing Capital International Airport(BJU), which further improved people-to-people exchanges across straits region.
Moreover ,in terms of political ties ,there were instances where Taiwanese officials visited Hong Kong during their official trips abroad .This move is seen as another sign that things are changing for better within ross-street environment
Despite these advances however ,the overall situation remains delicate due largely because security concerns remain high especially given ongoing geopolitical tensions involving North Korea's nuclear weapons program amongst others factors influencing regional stability.
In conclusion while progress has indeed been made toward improving cross-straits ties it still unclear if we should expect sustained peace & co-operation considering lingering complexities surrounding military presence along coastline areas near disputed maritime territory etcetera., which continue posing challenges for future development prospects across straits region
